The Musée du Luxembourg reopens. In scarcely ten years and despite the absence of permanent collections, the Musée du Luxembourg has forged a reputation as a major exhibition venue in Paris.

The reopening of the Musée du Luxembourg comes after a year of closure for major renovation work that has involved a major overhaul of the building and services for the public.

The layout for visitors has been made more fluid, and waiting time reduced, thanks notably to
modernized booking tools. The bookshop-boutique now has more books, products for children, as well as
product lines dedicated to the Musée and Jardin du Luxembourg. The new layout of the public areas has been
entrusted to the architectural agency of Japanese architect Shigeru Ban.
High ambitions for the Musée du Luxembourg:
- A major cultural project, on the themes of “Renaissance in Europe” and “Art and Power”, combining monograph
exhibitions of the greatest names of the Renaissance with for example “Cranach in his time”, the first exhibition for
the reopening,
- Thematic exhibitions illustrate the artistic vitality of the Renaissance in Europe,
- Projects for discovering prestigious collections: The Collection of the Princes Borromée, Masterpieces from
the Galleria dell'Academia in Venice, The Collection Senn-Foulds, The Pinacoteca of Brescia, etc.
- A proposed opening up to modern art: The Musée du Luxembourg proposes a programme celebrating the
history of the Palace, the Garden and the Museum and a look at modern art.
The Réunion des musées nationaux, now responsible for managing the museum, aims to make the Musée du
Luxembourg a major museum in France and internationally. The greatest French and international institutions
will be associated with this project, notably the museums of the Vatican, the museums of the Polo museale of
Florence, the Albertina Museum in Vienna and the National Gallery in London, as well as the major partner
museums of the Réunion des musées nationaux in France. Operating as part of a network of museums will
guarantee a quality programme of exhibitions and access to the most prestigious loans.

The Nouvel Odéon, a cinema like a theatre
The former cinema Racine Odéon, situated in the heart of the Latin Quarter, has just been totally renovated. The
new interior architecture and design of the place has been entrusted to French designer Matali Crasset, reputed
for her work on modularity, hospitality and appropriation. The originality of this atypical cinema, now named
Nouvel Odéon, lies in its facade, treated like a window onto the street. Matali Crasset wants spectators to come
here not just to see a film but for the place itself. The minimalist decoration plays up the effect of light in the
entrance hall, with the use of bright colours and light-coloured wood, whilst the cinema auditorium elegantly
contrasts dark-coloured walls and ceiling with bright orange seating. The cinema seats are numbered like at the
theatre, and an online reservation system makes it possible for spectators to choose their seating and even
print their ticket at home, enabling them to arrive at the last minute with a seat guaranteed. The Nouvel Odéon
also has a refreshment area with healthy balanced food including fresh and mostly organic products. The ground
floor is accessible from the street and equipped with a lift, making it one of the rare cinemas in the Latin Quarter
to be accessible to disabled people.
