De grote steden, in het bijzonder Sevilla, Valladolid, hoofdstad van Castilië, en Barcelona, hoofdstad van Corona de Aragón, hadden grote populaties joden, geconcentreerd in zogenaamde 'juderías', oftewel joodse wijken (CALL).
Tijdens de Middeleeuwen was er een redelijk vreedzame religieuze co-existentie in de koninkrijken van het schiereiland, alhoewel er onbedoelde incidenten tussen christenen, joden en moslims hadden plaatsgevonden. Er was een lange joodse traditie van sterrenkijken in Aragón. De vader van Ferdinand, Johan II van Aragón, benoemde Abiathar Crescas, een jood, tot beste sterrenkundige. De joden bezetten vele belangrijke posities, zowel religieus als politiek. Castilië had zelfs een officieuze rabbi, een joods meester in geneeskunde.
Aan het einde van de veertiende eeuw echter ontstond in enkele plaatsen in Spanje een golf van antisemitisme, aangemoedigd door de preken van Ferrant Martínez, aartsdeken van Écija. De pogroms van juni 1391 waren bijzonder bloedig: in Sevilla werden honderden joden omgebracht, de synagoge volledig verwoest en in andere steden zoals Córdoba, Valencia en Barcelona was het aantal slachtoffers erg hoog.
Een van de gevolgen van deze ongeregeldheden was de massale bekering van joden. Voor deze datum waren bekeringen gering in aantal, maar toen kreeg bekering ineens sociale betekenis. Sinds de vijftiende eeuw kan men spreken van 'judeoconversos', ook wel "nieuwe christenen" genoemd, als een nieuwe sociale groep, die met wantrouwen bekeken werd door zowel joden als door christenen. Zodoende echter ontsnapten de joden niet alleen aan mogelijke vervolgingen, maar waren ook in staat talrijke banen en posities te bekleden die normaliter verboden voor hen zouden zijn door wetten die joden ernstig beperkten.

The enclosure of the most ancient Call - Call Major - was located between the streets of l'Arc de Sant Ramon, Call, Bisbe and Sant Sever. In the middle of the XIIIth century it had to extend the geographical space destined to the community, and prospered in the adjacent of what is today the Church of Sant Jaume - Call Menor-.
Once the cemetery was sited out town, in the foothill of Monjuïc, , and we know today the names of some Jewish owners of vineyards, which they could use to prepare wine casher. Thanks to the most recent studies, based on notarial documents, we know that in the second half of the XIVth century one of the portals of Call Major was at the beginning the current street of Sant Domènec, which in that moment was the principal artery, forming a corner with the street of the Call. 
Opposite to the portal, out of the quarter, once was sited the bakery. Already in the interior, we locate some vital elements for the community: butcher's shop was along with the portal of entry, in the street of Sant Domènec (then of the Carnisseria); fishmonger's was in today street of the Fruita; water source supplying the Call was located in the street of Sant Honorat (then of the Font); in the current street of l'Arc de Sant Ramon (Escola dels Francesos of that time or dels Banys Freds) was the Synagogue that was binding together the members of French origin, and built with real permission in 1306.
Also we know where some of the important personalities were living: medicine doctors in the place that today is the Palau de la Generalitat, in the junction with Plaça Sant Jaume; David de Bellcaire was the owner of a number of premises along with the portal, between them, that one housing the doorman and that of butcher's shop. Castell Nou, where the inhabitants of the Call went to shelter after the assault of August 5, 1391, was located in the current street of Banys Nous, corner with the Call. And, finally, the Main Synagogue was in the extension of the street of Butcher's shop, known also as that of Escola Major.""
